Bye! September 2005

Times: Chelsea Given A Helping Hand

28 Sep 2005 Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea - CL Matchday 2

BBC - Liverpool and Chelsea cancelled each other out in a Champions League stalemate at Anfield.

Just put the goalless result aside, don't you think that Chelsea actually was nothing? Who says Chelsea is too strong for Liverpool? They were not EVEN that night, as Liverpool's obviously the better side. Chelsea couldn't even controll the ball and have too many silly mistakes, which I think made their place on the Premierleague table inconvincible. (Well, actually it's never convincing to me ever since this season.) While Liverpool played a great match. I was impressed, especially on Alonso and Hamann. They helped a lot keeping Liverpool's possession on the midfield, defended well and also made some great passing. Gerrard, Crouch and Garcia worked hard at the front. With the magnificent Anfield crowd, Liverpool looked really strong and aggressive.

However, it's a shame that the referee did a favor for them. Liverpool should have had a penalty early in the first half when Hyypia went down, tackled by Drogba. And, it's surely a handball for Gallas in the box as Carragher made a threatening header in the second half.

Rafa: "The penalty was clear watching the television. The question is when you play against a big team the small details make the difference." "We played a good game and for me we were better than Chelsea on the night." "We wanted to win the game and we tried to play with a high tempo and Crouch did well holding the ball up for us."

Carra: "It was a definite penalty, a certain penalty." "Before the game there was a lot of crying coming from their camp. They were crying about various things from last season and there were some sour grapes. But we have a little bit more dignity about this club than that and we will not cry too much about obvious decisions going against us."

Lampard: "Every team gives us different problems, and the problem was Crouchy." "He's very good at what he does, holding balls up and trying to bring people into the game and that was something to deal with." "Not only does he flick balls on, he brings people into play too. He's fresh and different."

Rafa: "I am sure they do not like playing Liverpool. They keep talking and talking about us. I think they are worried; I think they are afraid. I can't stop him talking about us but if they keep doing it, it means we are doing the right thing."

Carra: "We watched videos of Chelsea and when we saw their game against Bayern Munich, I couldn't remember seeing so many long balls since I started watching football in the 1980s."

Garrard: "Everyone is saying that they (Chelsea) are invincible and unbeatable, and that no-one was going to take any points off them but we have proved to ourselves that the gap is not that big." "Nevertheless the result on Wednesday gives us is a massive belief that we can match them again and take the game to them. It also instils a confidence in us that we can claim all three points."

Garcia & Cisse Scored!

24 Sep, 2005 Birmingham 2-2 Liverpool

Liverpoolfc.tv - The Reds broke the deadlock at St Andrews on 67 minutes when Luis Garcia netted but the hosts hit back with two quick goals and it needed a Djibril Cisse penalty seven minutes from time to rescue a point.

Gerrard said: "Taking the lead was the hard part and to concede after that was a mistake, it's not good enough." "We're happy to still be unbeaten and we feel as if we've improved a lot, but we need to start taking three points instead of one."

I think Gerrard is right. I'm glad we finally scored, but we should have took that 3 points. It's a shame. We'll do better next time, I'm sure. At least we're improving in away matches.

25 Sep, 2005
Rafa said: "Steve is not just one more player, he is the key player for this club."
"I thought we played really well in both games against Chelsea in the Champions League. But I don't talk aloud about other teams and their managers. I prefer to talk about my team.
If one week you say 'I'm the best, you can lose the next game and then what happens? People remind you about what you said.
I don't know if I'm different to Mourinho but I need to do my job and give confidence to my players."

Cisse said: "I love this club and I want to be at Liverpool for a very long time." "England has not seen the best of me. I really want to show people what I can do."
"I love to play. But the boss can't put 20 players on the pitch so someone has to be on the bench and at the moment it's me. I accept it. I'm not frustrated."
"When you score at Anfield it's hard to explain, but it's like 'Wooah! Wow! nothing else in life. I'm not going to say scoring's like making love, but it's almost the same."

Hey, sometimes I just love Cisse's words, and also Rafa's. Read more on Liverpoolfc.tv.

Acoustic Of The Week

A Man with guitar always looks charming to me! And, it would be perfect if he comes from the UK, singing with his british accent..... Whoa, hold on, of course he can't just sing rubbish.
Select 'The Futureheads' - exclusive performance on the UGO player.

*Update* Okay, someone just told me they speak with Newcastle (Sunderland) accent. Hmmm....great, great..no wonder I couldn't understand the interview on the UGO. But sometimes it depends on the person, right? I can understand some from Ross Millard in the interview, while not much from David Jaff. .......Well, I only heard that he wanted to be....the batman.

Help!

I don't believe everyone could understand his writing on the board, neither got what he was talking about. I don't want to blame too much. But in the class I felt frustrated, as there's nothing I could do about it. It's even hard taking note!

Apparently I was not the only one who was bored. Well, maybe I should bring my digital camera every time, so that I can take those lousy writing home, and save some time guessing the words.

Sin City

Sin City(2005)
Brilliant. I can't find any other adjective. Just brilliant. Is it weird that a girl like this kind of film? Well, I guess I'm from Mars, not Venus. It should win the best picture, really. It's presented in a perfect way of a film based on comic book!

Must get it! That's a true 'comic book', and even more than that! Someone related this film to 'Pulp Fiction'. I didn't notice that, though I just finished 'Pulp Fiction' recently. But I think it makes sense. "A bunch of stories set in a consistent world, with characters falling in and out of each others plot lines."
I love the colour it displays. Special, beautiful, and....again...brilliant!

4 Clean Sheets

18 Sep, 2005 Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

BBC - Liverpool avoided a fourth consecutive home defeat by Manchester United but failed to find a killer blow despite a determined display at Anfield.

Benitez said: "I prefer to look at the positives. We have kept four clean sheets in a row and that is a positive thing. Okay we need to score goals but that will come." "We are now at the same level as Manchester United and we will keep on improving."

Gerrard said: "On reflection it was a fair result but I think they will be happy to come to Anfield and get a point. They controlled the first half and we pushed more in the second half without creating any clear-cut chances."

BBC - Crouch has dismissed criticism that his arrival has turned Liverpool into a long-ball team - "The United fans are always going to take the mickey, but we know we don't play like that." "I take a lot of the stick as a compliment. I wasn't going to let Rio Ferdinand have an easy time. When you play against world class players like that you want to unsettle them and that's my job done. I thought I did that well."

Stevie: I'm Sick Of Hearing That

Liverpoolfc.tv - STEVIE: LET'S PROVE EVERYONE WRONG

"Domestically, people only ever speak about last season's top three teams and I'm sick of hearing that."
"It hurts when people talk about Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal all the time and we don't get a mention."
"We need to break up the so-called top three. We have to prove we can get among them. We're playing United on Sunday and we've got games against Chelsea coming up so these next few weeks will give us a chance to make a statement."

People always ask me: why support Liverpool? Yeah, it's strange because I'm not from Liverpool or even England. It should be that 'so-called top three' team, right, as I just started to watch the Premierleague last season. And you'll say, okay then it must because they won the Champions Leauge! No, I decided it's Liverpool after the Carling Cup final, which was a few months before the Champions League final I guess. I'm still sometimes feel surprised about being a Liverpool fan in the end, but I never doubt that they're the best team after they lost to Chelsea in the Carling Cup final last season.

I'm also sick about hearing the top-three talk without Liverpool. Sick about always Chelsea's match on the TV schedule. Sick about hardly find Liverpool's shirt or other products here. Sick about only Man Utd and Arsenal's official magazines are sold here. Sick about people saying Liverpool's just LUCKY to win the Champions League....

Let's prove everyone wrong!

Nature's Calling / Wake Up

TimesOnline - Please Miss, may the US President be excused from the room? - It was one of those moments that politicians dread. Sitting in America’s chair in the United Nations Security Council, President Bush realised he simply had to go to the toilet. He pencilled an urgent note to Condoleezza Rice, his Secretary of State, who was sitting just behind him: "I think I may need a bathroom break? Is this possible? W."

It's not my point to say something about George W Bush, though the situation and some reactions of media are really funny. What's I want to say here is that the media of Taiwan is a joke. Except some breaking news and some 'sick' news like psycho murderers or rapists, we don't really have international news. According to a survey of a business magazine in Taiwan, there are about 80% people here don't know which city the UN located. I think the media focus on the wrong things, and that shows how narrow-sighted Taiwanese are.

The coverage like this, a joke of George W Bush, can you believe that, is on the front-page of our evening newspapers! This is silly because we don't even have the coverage about what the meeting is it. What's the topic of his speech? What's the meeting for?

I'm glad that I know a little English, so that I won't be fooled by the media here or being ignorant about the world sometimes. Hey, wake up Chinese! Be international!

Great Start

13 Sep, 2005 Real Betis 1-2 Liverpool - CL Matchday 1

uefa.com - A blistering start by Liverpool FC ensured they took all three points from their opening UEFA Champions League Group G game away to Real Betis Balompié, goals inside the first quarter-hour from Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Luis García earning the holders a 2-1 win.

Don't have too much time to review this match. All I want to say is...Rafa is really a wise manager, and good summer signs of Reina, Sissoko, and Zenden. The surprising starting 11 did surprise Real Betis I guess, but actually the second half was horrible. (Hyypia...should move faster!!) Anyway, a great start in the group stage. By the way, Chelsea 1-0 won over Anderlecht. Well, I say they're really good at 1-0 win, don't they..

Benitez said: "I felt we needed fresh legs for a very difficult match. Some people were tired, including Steven, and we needed to rest players for this match. We must use all our squad to compete in top competitions."

Gerrard said: "We've got a big squad of fantastic players and I think you'll see the manager use them throughout the season."

The First Day Of School

Tired because I got up at 4:30 AM to watch the US Open Final and then went straight to the school. Everything's just getting on track in a new term, and I'll be busy on choosing my courses this week. I think I have to take some courses from other departments to prepare for my exchange plan to England. I'm glad that my friend, Evie, is always with me. She wants to go to the US, while my dream place is England. She's preparing for the TOEFL test, and mine is IELTS. We're heading to different places, but I think we have the same goal.

I'm not sure if I can post that often as the school begins. Well, I'll try, though sometimes I don't know who am I talking to. But I love my own posts indeed. I think it's hard for people to imagine how difficult for me to write English. My English isn't that good, and I have to spend a lot of time on just one post. (I guess I just pretend I can write something. Trust me, there are still many things I want to say but fail to express in English.) That's why I treasure every single post here.

I didn't give my blog site to any of my friends around me. They don't even know it exists. Sometimes it's just better to have another space to get some fresh air from your daily life. Blogging could be a way to scape by sharing things with strangers. No one will blame you because they don't know you. Don't you think?

Life is going back to normal here, though I'll still stay up for football matches sometimes. I hate people asking: "How's your summer vacation?" Obviously I don't know how to answer that. Yes, I did nothing, and yes, I did something but don't think you'll get it, neither want to explain it.

US Open Final

BBC - Peerless Federer retains US crown - Defending champion Roger Federer dashed American hopes of a fairytale victory for Andre Agassi with a four-set victory in Sunday's US Open final.

Both are really great players I think. Agassi is already a legend, and Federer is still writing history pages. If any tennis fan missed this match, they would regret for it. You can see how much Agassi loves tennis and how talented Federer is in this match. I like particularly what they said afterwards.

Federer:
"I look up to him because he's been around so long with great results. There's a lot of respect from my side."
"I'd like to congratulate Andre on a great run and I hope you keep on playing and we can have some more enjoyable matches."
"I amazed myself that I can back it up one after another. I wonder why I always play so well, especially on the big occasions."

Agassi:
"He's the best I've ever played against."
"To be here at an age where I can take in that sort of love, and be at an age where I can embrace it is a tremendous feeling. I'll never forget this."
"Thank you New York, it's been a great 20 years."

Goal?

10 Sep, 2005 Tottenham 0-0 Liverpool

BBC - Spurs debutant Grzegorz Rasiak and Liverpool's Peter Crouch both had goals disallowed as an exciting match at White Hart Lane ended goalless.

Benitez: "It was an exciting game. It was two teams trying to win. For me the most important thing is that we have a clean sheet and we have to continue to work hard in attack. The problem is if you do not create opportunities but we have done. The question now is just to have a bit of luck."

US Open Semi-final

BBC - Agassi edges past Ginepri in five - Andre Agassi will make his sixth US Open final appearance on Sunday after beating Robby Ginepri in five sets in the semi-finals.

BBC - Federer win sets up Agassi final - The top seed was pushed hard but came through 6-3 7-6 (7-0) 4-6 6-3 for his ninth successive win over Hewitt.

Federer beat Hewitt...'again', but this timie there was something different from the past two years. Hewitt did really well, and he seemed to find out a way to challenge the world No.1. It wasn't an easy win for federer as it used to be when meeting Hewitt. Great to see Hewitt picked up some confidence back, and I believe there would be something different if he didn't miss that 5 set points in the second set. He definitely has the power to defeat Federer, though Federer, I must admit it, is completely a genius. But the reason why I like Hewitt is because of his strong spirit. He always shows how much he wants to win the match, and he will fight for every ball. I like his determined eyes in the matches, and I think there is nothing you can't do in sports if you got the potential and the determination of wining.

Semi-finals:
Kim Clijsters (Bel) bt Maria Sharapova (Rus) 6-2 6-7 6-3

Final:
BBC - Clijsters sweeps to US Open title - The Belgian dominated from the outset, breaking three times in the first set and twice in the second on her way to a 6-3 6-1 win.

Good job!! Hewitt's ex-girlfriend, Kim Clijsters won the title! It seems that someone finally can stop Sharapova and Williams. (I still think it would be great if she and Hewitt didn't break up....)

US Open 4th Round & Quarter-final

4th round:
Andre Agassi (USA) bt Xavier Malisse 6-3 6-4 6-7 4-6 6-2
Lleyton Hewitt (Aus) bt Dominik Hrbaty (Svk) 6-1 6-4 6-2
Roger Federer (Swi) bt Nicolas Kiefer (Ger) 6-4 6-7 6-3 6-4

I was expecting Kierfer to beat Federer. He did well, and he's the only one so far in this tournament who has won ONE set from Federer!

Quarter-final:
BBC: Agassi survives epic Blake battle - The 35-year-old fought back from two sets down and then 3-0 behind in the tiebreak to beat his compatriot 3-6 3-6 6-3 6-3 7-6 (8-6).

It was really a great match! It's probably the best mens single in US Open 2005 so far. We saw a legendary man who never gave up in his 20th year of this tournament!

Lleyton Hewitt (Aus) bt Jarkko Nieminen (Fin) 2-6 6-1 3-6 6-3 6-1
Roger Federer (Swi) bt David Nalbandian (Arg) 6-2 6-4 6-1

Finland's left-handed Nieminen is a dangerous rival. He's even not a seed, but he can bring troubles to top players. Hewitt won through 5 sets again. I did worry about him, but as I heard his trademark, 'Come on!!' came out at the begining of the fifth set, I knew he ruled. As for Federer's quater-final, I couldn't believe he won that easily over Nalbandian! It's obvious that his in his best form. Well, the least one I would like to see in the semi-final: Hewitt is going to play against Federer!!

Kim Clijsters (Bel) bt Venus Williams (USA) 4-6 7-5 6-1
Elena Dementieva (Rus) bt Lindsay Davenport (USA) 6-1 3-6 7-6

Oh no!! My favorite, Davenport was out!! It's a pitty! I thought she could win the title this time. While Clijsters and Williams had a great match! Another valuable comeback in the quater-final! She will face Sharapova next in the last 4. Hope she can win and end that noisy Russian girl. (Sorry, if there is her fan here.)

What The Hell...

7 Sep, 2005 Northern Ireland 1-0 England - World Cup Qualifying

BBC - Northern Ireland put a dent in England's World Cup hopes as David Healy's goal gave them a stunning win.

Okay. I'm trying to calm down. But I'm really pissed off about the manager's tactic last night. Rooney played as left winger?? At begining I just thought, alright, maybe he could do that. But, obviously he couldn't and he was frustrated during the match. He got a yellow card and almost lost his temper in the first half. On the 54th minute, Eriksson sent on Joe Cole for Wright-Phillips. I thought, great, now finally we could go back to 4-4-2 with Beckham on the right, Joe Cole on the left and both Rooney and Owen up fornt! But, I was really really really shocked that Joe Cole was playing on the right afterward, and Rooney was still on the left!? What the hell was he thinking?

BBC - Defiant Eriksson vows to fight on - "I'm not going to resign. I'm going to try to make it right. In October, win two games and we qualify."
I don't think he should resign or get sacked NOW. It's risky to change manager at this time. England must win the next two home matches to be qualified. We can't afford gambling or rush decisions, and there is no enough time for players to adapt a new manager. Of course, he can't just walk away and leave this mess to someone else. He needs to take the responsibility. I say if England can't be qualified, then he resigns. I do feel angry about the whole thing, but not now I think. Someone just got to tell him, forget about 4-5-1 and go back to 4-4-2. You can experiment that in a friendly, but never in a qualier.

Joe Cole Out, Owen In

BBC: Cole to make way for Owen return - England winger Joe Cole looks set to be dropped to accommodate the return of Michael Owen, despite scoring the winner against Wales at the weekend.

Owen: "I'm confident of my position in the team and my value to it on recent and past performances."
"I don't think I'd be especially thankful if the manager played me. I don't think I owe anyone any favours."
"The manager chooses the best 11 players. If I'm in that, I'm not going to sit around and think who might not be playing or should be playing."

That is really 'straightforward', but he's telling the truth I think.
Sagittarius trait No. 7, 'they do lack a bit of tact, direct and to the point', and No.12, 'honest but more than a little tactless. may be tactless but is never deliberately cruel'.

But, actually what makes Owen more like a typical Sagittarius is: No.31, 'Negative Characteristics: Gamblers'.

Everyday Is A Cross

I'll have the IELTS test on 29 October, and it'll decide whether I can go to England next year or not. As you can see, time is running out. Actually when I started this blog in July, I wanted to use it to practise my English writing. You know, write someting more about current events, social problems, environmantal issues....something is so-called 'academic' I guess. But, look around here after two months. Yeah, Sagittarius trait No.13, "ambitious - always aiming higher than the goal they initially set for themselves". I'm not writing academic here. They're just football, films, music, born today, tennis... Well, I now start to feel a little neverous about my test.

The test has 4 parts: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing. Writing is my worst part because I'm not good at spelling. I'm sure you can't imagine how bad I am. (some easy but I always forget: surprise, congratulation, economic, vanilla, calendar, efficiency.....too many) Believe or not, It took me a lot of time checking the dictionary when post something here. Anyway, 'time' is also my enemy in Writing test. (Here I go again....checking the spelling of 'enemy'...)

The picture was taken in my room on the wall. I draw a cross on it when one day passes, and it reminds me that the test is just around the corner. I was expecting that would give me some warning and stop fooling around, but to be honest, it didn't. Sagittarius trait No.23, "generally do not suffer from stress-related problems".

Oh, I should mention that today's 'Born Today' is Tim Henman. It's his 31th birthday. I think I'll post a lots about tennis recently, so just skip this one.

4-5-1?

3 Sep, 2005 Wales 0-1 England - World Cup Qualifying

BBC - Joe Cole's second-half winner sank Wales and kept England on course for World Cup qualification.

We got 3 points after all. There are a lot of criticisms before and also after the match, but it's reasonable as there are so many excellent players out there. People want them not only to win, but win comfortablely and beautifully. A new formation was adopted in this match, which is rare to see in England national team. Owen was out suspended, so did injured G.Neville, Terry, Campbell and King. Rooney was up front alone. Wright-Phillips and J.Cole as right and left wingers. Beckahm was the holding role in central midfield, along with Gerrard and Lampard. With G.Neville and Terry missing, Carragher and Young got the chance to appear at Central-back and right-back. As for goalkeeper, James failed to get another chance to join England, and Robinson was the No.1 in the squad.

How did it work with 4-5-1? Beckham's place has been argued in recent years. I do agree that he can't play well at right as he used to be. He's getting old and that's not where he plays for Real Madrid for two years. But in 4-5-1, the problem is sorted out. I think he played quite well in this match. Gerrard and Lampard got more chance to join the attack as Beckham was behind them. The only problem with 4-5-1 I think is about Rooney. He needs someone to partner with him. He's not that kind of striker who are used to be up front alone.

It's a tough dicision about formation for the manager. As we know Owen will be back in next qualifying match against Northern Ireland this Wednesday. Will he keep 4-5-1 or go back to 4-4-2? If it's 4-4-2, then who should be left out in the midfiled?

Today when I was listening to the BBC FiveLive. A Liverpool fan called in, and said that he thought Gerrard could play as right-back and everything would be solved! That's interesting, isn't it? He argued that Gerrard did pretty well at that position in the extra time of Liverpool's Champions League Final. I've never thought about that. But, well, why not? At the same time, I wonder why no one question Lampard's place? It's not because I'm Liverpool's fan, but I think Lampard isn't as good as last season so far.

US Open 2nd & 3rd Round

2nd round:
Lleyton Hewitt (Aus) bt Jose Acasuso (Arg) 7-6 7-6 6-2
Andre Agassi (USA) bt Ivo Karlovic (Cro) 7-6 7-6 7-6
Roger Federer (Swi) bt Fabrice Santoro (Fra) 7-5 7-5 7-6

BBC: Battling Murray crashes out in US - Teenager Andy Murray made an agonising exit at the US Open, suffering a 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 2-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-0 defeat to Frenchman Arnaud Clement.
BBC: Inspired Blake ends Nadal hopes - James Blake produced an electrifying display to shatter Rafael Nadal's title dreams in front of a raucous crowd packed inside Arthur Ashe stadium.

It's really disappointing to see Nadal's defeat. I thought he could bring some threat to Federer or Hewitt in competing for the title this year. On the other hand, Blake did a great job! He defeated Rusedski in the fist round and then the tough Nadal. Maybe he can creat more surprise in the tournament. As for Murray, the only hope of briton, I think he's still young while has many potentials. But first of all, he needs to improve his fittness. He threw up in the first-round match. Some reports says:

"However Murray may be following in the puddles of giants. In 1996 Pete Sampras vomited on court in the middle of a fifth-set tiebreaker, also at the US Open, and went on to win the match. In 2004 Todd Reid, an Australian, threw up while competing in the Australian Open, and in 1993 Goran Ivanisevic, from Croatia, vomited during the French Open."

In the second round, he had cramp problem again, just like at Wimbledon last time during the five-set defeat by Nalbandian. He's just US Open junior champion last year, and now he goes into the professional. There are still a lot of things he needs to adapt and learn. Who knows if he could become the next Tim Henman.

3rd round:
Andre Agassi (USA) bt Tomas Berdych (Cze) 3-6 6-1 6-4 7-6
Roger Federer (Swi) bt Olivier Rochus (Bel) 6-3 7-6 6-2

BBC: Hewitt sinks Dent in epic match - Third seed Lleyton Hewitt teetered on the brink of defeat before finally seeing off Taylor Dent 6-3 3-6 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 7-5.

Why It Took So Long?

BBC - The southern Gulf Coast of the United States bore the brunt of Katrina. Officials believe several thousand people may be dead. Thousands of people have been made homeless in New Orleans. Some 80% of the city is flooded and there has been widespread looting. A complete evacuation of the city has been ordered.BBC - Questions grow over rescue chaos

The question we want to know is: how could it happen in the most powerful country in the world? They are rich, they got resources, and the best facilities, but why it took so long to rescue those victims?

One man, George Turner, who was still waiting to be evacuated, said: "Why? That's all I want to ask President Bush."

John Rhinehart, the administrator of a New Orleans hospital without power and water, said: "I'm beginning to wonder if the government is more concerned about the looting than people who are dying in these hospitals."

The head of the New Orleans emergency operations, Terry Ebbert: "This is a national disgrace. Fema has been here three days, yet there is no command and control. We can send massive amounts of aid to tsunami victims, but we can't bail out the city of New Orleans."

Let's pray for those who are still suffering and also expect all the aid can be done for them. Human beings should try to be more humble to the nature. When it attack, we know we are just too small and fragile on the earth. Also, how selfish we can be.

Acoustic Of The Week

Watch Aqulung - 'Brighter Than Sunshine' exclusive preformance at VH1.com. The song is from his album, 'Strange and Beautiful', and also included in the soundtrack of film, A Lot Like Love.

Staring Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet, it's a light romantic comedy. Not so good, but enough to make me laugh and enjoy it. By the way, I love this poster so much! And of course, the song, 'Brighter Than Sunshine'. At VH1.com, you can also click to watch the MTV. There are some film clips.
